Welcome to the wild world of animals! Our planet is bursting with incredible creatures, from the tiniest buzzing bee to the gigantic blue whale. Scientists have discovered over 8.7 million different types of animals, and they live everywhere—from the icy poles to the steamy rainforests right outside your back door.
What is an Animal?
Animals are living things that need to eat food (they can’t make their own like plants do!) and can usually move around on their own. They come in all shapes and sizes.
Let’s Explore the Groups:
- Mammals: We are mammals! So are dogs, cats, and elephants. They usually have hair or fur, and mothers feed their babies milk.
- Birds: These animals have feathers, beaks, and lay eggs. Most of them can fly, but not all (like penguins and ostriches!).
- Reptiles: Snakes, lizards, and turtles are reptiles. They have dry, scaly skin and usually lay eggs on land.
- Fish: These are the masters of the water! They have gills to breathe underwater and fins to swim.
- Amphibians: Frogs and salamanders are amphibians. They start life in the water with gills and later grow lungs to live on land.
